Many toy companies have tried to come up with a toy that is as popular as the teddy bear, but to date, all attempts have failed miserably. Since the birth of the teddy bear in 1902 children (and lots of adults too) have come to accept him as a companion that can share good times and bad times, triumphs and disasters, laughter and tears. He is loved by everyone the whole world over and has shared many of mans adventures. The famous british poet, Sir John Betjemen had a very special teddy bear who he called Archibald Ormsby-Gore.

In 1960 Betjemen wrote about his bear in his autobiographical poem 'Summoned By Bells.' Evelyn Waugh wrote a teddy bear into her novel Brideshead Revisited whom she called Aloysius. Donald Campbell owned a bear who he called Mr Whoppitt, who he used as a mascot when attempting records, sadly Whoppitt was with him on the day of the crash of Bluebird but because of his filling which made him float, Mr Whoppitt survived. At ginosbears.co.uk we hear loads of stories of people and their special teddy bears and indeed Gino himself is a very special Steiff teddy bear who has had more than his fair share of adventures including racing fast cars, he has even completed the Cannonball Run and has the medals to prove it. You can read more about him by looking at his blog on ginosbears.co.uk

Teddy bears were of great comfort during the two world wars. At the outbreak of the First World War, production almost came to a halt across continental Europe due to factory workers and owners being called up for military service and the toy companies buildings were of course, required for the war effort. During the Second World War materials were rationed and so commercially produced teddy bears were in short supply, but the ones that were made often had sorter necks, limbs and muzzles in order to save fabric. The great old teddy bear befriended hundreds of children who were suffering the ravages of war, especially those little children who were evacuated from their homes, sometimes their old bear was the only friend they had, he became their hero...

The old teddy bear has so much history and during his life has performed amazing acts of heroism, we could spend ages recalling some of the stories that we hear about people and their teddy bears, some are wonderful and some are sad. Where is your old teddy bear right now? Try and find him, he still loves you and he will be so happy to see you, give him a hug you know he deserves it. Take your old bear and together have a look at ginosbears.co.uk where you can both see lots of old teddy bears and read more about them and most of all have fun
